Issue #42·May 15, 2022·2025 Series

Mental Health Awareness Month seems off to me I don't know about you, but I feel like we have been talking more and

more about mental health--thankfully! We are and have been in crisis since March 13, 2020. I actually believe we were in crisis well before that date. It just so happens that is the date we started waking up and realizing it. We slowed down enough to start feeling our feelings and it has been scary to go through the journey. People have lost jobs, ended relationships, lost family members and friends to Covid which has caused an incredible amount of grief. On the flip side many have started their own businesses, found love, started being more mindful and taking better care of themselves. Mental Health has become the center of our attention! This is great news! I have said this before and I will say it a 1000x over, learning about the Enneagram is the one thing I have done that has helped my mental health more than anything I have ever done. I cannot imagine going into lockdown or any crisis without having the wisdom in my heart. I use it every second of every day! All of us have a go-to emotion when under stress. Anger, anxiety, angst, or fear are the most common. Understanding the personality is hijacking the reaction as a defense

mechanism to protect you from feeling hurt in some way is empowering. Here is the 3
step process to change it all!
Stop Drop and Roll!
Stop and notice your reaction--what are you feeling? Just notice without reaction or
judgement.
Drop the defense-i.e. your reaction-anxiety, anger, etc...
Roll into the present moment with conscious compassion for yourself and the person
who triggered the emotion.
I was playing tennis yesterday and my opponent called my ball out. It was not out. I saw
the ball inside the line. I am an eight on the Enneagram which goes to anger when
triggered. I was pissed! WTFrank! How dare her! I challenged the call to no avail. Here
is the work begins.
I stopped and noticed how angry I was in that moment.
I recognized immediately this was my protector parts within the Eight showing up. I
dropped the defense-i.e. anger and rolled into the present moment with compassion for
myself and for my opponent who was scared to death after I challenged the call. I could
see the fear in her eyes. Eights can be scary when they are mad. I realized it as soon
as I yelled at her.
I reigned it in and played the remainder of the game. I am not going to lie and say it was
just that easy. It took some self-talk and deep breathing to change my thoughts,
feelings, and behaviors. I will say this was only possible because of the Enneagram. It is
a powerful tool.
You cannot repress your emotions. Feelings are not right or wrong; they just are what
they are. But they do not have to put you on a hamster wheel reacting unconsciously.
When we suppress our unwanted emotions, they will manifest in physical pain in our

  • bodies which I discussed a few days ago. So we must learn listen to our body, mind,
  • and spirit. This is how the Enneagram gives you freedom!
  • What is freedom anyway?
  • Our thoughts create emotions and the emotions trigger more thoughts, feelings, and
  • beliefs aka stories that keep us trapped.
  • The stories we tell become our reality. What if there is another way to look at the
  • situation?
