Finding the True Self when Life is kicking you in the Gut As you all know I have moved to California late last Spring

from Hilton Head, SC. My husband loves California. This is his dream! He loves everything about being here on the Monterey Peninsula. He is as happy as a clam! I have had a more challenging time with the transition. I have had to dig deep into my thoughts, beliefs, habits, and deepest spiritual practices. In doing so, I had rediscovered Pema Chodron, an American Buddhist nun. She has written several books that really get to the heart of it and how to deal with the hard stuff we call life. She offers great advice to stay with Self. Breathe into the spaces that scare you. Several years ago I participated in a Jesse Itzler program called "We do hard stuff." I believe I am built to do the hard stuff. I am an Eight on the Enneagram aka the Challenger, the Boss. I am strong. I can handle a lot. And, yet this move and all the changes have kicked me in the gut. So how do you show up and build a business, a new community, take care of your family, and yourself when it's really hard? It is really difficult when you have a harsh critic in your ear telling you to run faster, try harder, you should be able to do this. You are a yoga teacher, an Ayurveda Counselor, a licensed therapist and Enneagram coach for crying out loud! You have ALL the tools to get through anything. Then I realized how ashamed I was for not being able to handle it all. That was a big wake-up call! I feared that if I admitted I was struggling, I would be judged. Something must be wrong with my practices. If I cannot handle all the balls that have come down the pike over not only the past year, but the past 5 years then there is a problem with me.

Then I read a book by Donna Farhi who is an international renowned yoga teacher. If
you have talked to me over the past 3 months, I am sure I have recommended Bringing
Yoga to Life to you. It is such a beautiful book with a practical approach to living yoga
rather than simply showing up to do the pretty poses. She asked a question in chapter
17 about Measuring Up. “What was my life like before I started practicing yoga, have
you seen any improvement in life since then?"
I realized I was not practicing the one thing I preach the most: COMPASSION!
I was not giving myself the same grace I offer my clients. Nor was I acknowledging the
massive growth. I realized the expectations I had for myself were unattainable. It was
time for a ReSet!
MindSet ReSet:
Yoga teaches us to not be attached to the outcome. Farhi goes onto to remind us that
"Vairagya is the ultimate attachment: a loyal marriage to the Self.” Vairagya translates to
detachment or dispassion; however, when you really understand the richness of the
word, you will be able to stay centered and passionate about life while remaining in
Self-Energy.
Affirmation:

Come Back to Center knowing I am Connected to SELF
Celebrations:
In other news, I ran the Big Sur Marathon 3 weeks ago and boy was it a day! Certainly
one for the books to celebrate the power of the mind. My back went out at mile 17/18
and I started affirming how strong my body was and how grateful I was. I told my
running partner we only had to run 2 miles to get to 20 then 2 in/out Point Lobos 2 miles
to the finish. So it is only 2 miles (3times). We got excited and finished strong without a
dry eye!

If you are someone you know is struggling, I have new offerings coming soon! For now,
I have 5 slots open for 1:1 coaching or deeper trauma work.

With love,

Jennifer
